Led by Graham Taylor and under the ownership of Elton John, Watford followed up their second place in the First Division with the club's first European adventure, before finishing the season with a trip to Wembley for an FA Cup final. After eliminating Kaiserslautern in Germany and then Levski Spartak Sofia in Bulgaria, Watford ultimately exited the UEFA Cup against Sparta Prague, who were stronger over the two matches.

After the departure of Luther Blissett to AC Milan for a record fee of 1 million, the new Scottish strike duo of the Hornets, Mo Johnston and George Reilly, took the club to its very first FA Cup final. A good start to the match in the final was cancelled out by Graeme Sharp's opening goal for Everton, before a highly disputed goal from Andy Gray was enough for the Toffees to lift the trophy.
